Solid hardwood flooring is all wood and is usually 5/8" to 3/4" thick. Because it’s solid wood, it can be sanded and refinished many times. However, it’s susceptible to changes in humidity, and isn’t recommended for below-grade basements.

Engineered hardwood flooring is a veneer of real wood glued to several layers of wood underneath, like plywood. This gives engineered wood excellent stability over time and makes it a good choice for any area of your home, including below-grade basements. Depending on the thickness of the hardwood veneer, engineered hardwood flooring can only be sanded and refinished once or twice during its lifetime.

Vinyl Planks

Luxury vinyl planks (LVP) are long, narrow planks of vinyl designed to emulate the most popular wood flooring styles. These planks are thicker and more rigid than sheet vinyl, which helps make them more durable and scratch-resistant. Most luxury vinyl planks are composed of thick PVC with a design layer that gives the planks their authentic hardwood look.

Vinyl Tiles

Luxury vinyl tile (LVT) is constructed very similarly to LVP, but it is engineered to mimic stone, porcelain, or ceramic tile. Like LVP, LVT also has a thick vinyl layer that makes it more durable and rigid than sheet vinyl with a design layer that has natural stone designs and textures to provide incredibly realistic visuals.

Sheet vinyl has been a popular flooring choice for many decades because of its waterproof properties, and the fact that it is very budget-friendly. Unlike sheet vinyl of the past, modern technology has allowed sheet vinyl to make great strides in terms of aesthetic appeal.

Getting the RIGHT Carpet

Selecting the correct carpet is a combination of the practical and the aesthetic.
A practical choice for for high-traffic areas would be a durable carpet that will wear well.  Some carpets are more suitable than others in this example.  
As for aesthetic, the choice comes down to what you like, especially in terms of color selection.

The six types of carpet are plush, frieze, Air.O, Berber, and cut-and-loop. Each type has its own look and performance conditions.

• Plush Carpet has the same twist and finish, which creates a velvety look. It shows vacuum marks and footprints and can become crushed down with heavy traffic. Consequently, it is better in low-traffic areas, such as a bedroom, living room, or dining room.
• Frieze Carpet is a cut pile with a very high twist level that actually curls over at the end. It’s very durable, doesn’t show footprints or vacuum marks, and is suitable for high-traffic areas.
• Air.O Carpets from Mohawk Carpet are hypoallergenic, easy to clean, and VOC-Free. The Air.O fibers do not absorb moisture, which helps prevent the growth of allergens. The unique construction of these carpets provides better airflow. Also, the carpet releases more dust and dirt during vacuuming. Air.O carpet fiber is created with advanced polymers, which means there are no latex or harmful VOCs. Air.O carpets are safe and odor-free. In addition, Air.O carpets are 100% recyclable. Air.O carpets are stain resistance, soil resistance, and a durable flooring choice for any home.
• Berber Carpet is made of bulky yarns that are looped. Because the tips aren’t cut, this carpet is very durable. Berber is ideal for casual living areas. The carpet comes in solid colors, flecks, and patterns formed by various levels of loops. Berber is a very popular carpet these days.
• Cut-and-Loop Carpets feature both cut and looped yarns. The combination of cut and loop makes it possible to create a wide variety of patterns in the carpet, particularly geometric patterns as well as floral patterns. They’re used in both casual and formal rooms. The patterns and multiple colors used with this type of carpet result in a carpet that is good at hiding colors and holding up in high-traffic areas.
